The Aussie Flag Debate

For me the Australian flag is one of the most visually appealing flags in the world. I believe that the Union Jack belongs to Australia just as much as it belongs to Great Britain. Both states have a shared history and culture and should really be part of the same country. I do not think the Australian flag needs to change but appreciate that many in Australia want a flag that reflects their uniqueness in a more specific way.

I am in favour of the reunification of the Anglosphere into a single superpower (incorporating Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, and New Zealand) with a unified government. As such I don’t see Australia as a foreign country but as an essential and equal component of my own.

However, I don’t think that Australia moving away from a flag that incorporates the Union Jack will make the bonds between the people of Australia and Great Britain weaker. The links between our peoples run much deeper than that. When the Canadians adopted a new flag it did not impact negatively on our family of nations.

The new superpower should not be a recreation of the Old British Empire and should reflect the member countries in all their uniqueness. Its capital should not be London, but should be more central between its constituent parts, the best place in my opinion would be Vancouver in British Columbia.

I thought I would put forward my own ideas for a new Australian flag just in case they ever start seriously discussing changing it again.

All incorporate the Australian national colours of green and gold, that are taken from the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) – Australia’s national flower, and the 7 pointed Commonwealth Star that represents the Australian Federation.

The Elegant Flag

This is the simplest flag incorporating the national colours and the Commonwealth Star. It is similar to the flag of Texas, but has different coloured strips and a different shaped star.

Federation Unity Flag

This is inspired by South Africa’s rainbow nation style flag. It shows the central importance of Australian Federation while acknowledging the part played by different groups in building Australia. Australia the island continent surrounded by the ocean in unity and harmony. The colours could reflect home and away colours for Australia’s future sporting teams.
